Making eNewsletters Fun

I’ve whipped up a few eNewsletters now, but designing for Rob Frith allows a little more creativity and personality to be injected… in fact, it’s de rigueur! So I broke out the fat Texta and drew a couple of loose illustrations as changeable headers for Rob’s amusing missives.

Just received Rob’s first info-tainment instalment this morning – funny to see my design sitting in the Inbox – and looking forward to reading more of Rob & his gang’s shootings.

Una Glennon’s new website

Last year, Una invited me to work on the design for her book, Ciara’s Gift, which describes her journey through grief after the loss of her beloved daughter. Soft watercolours inspired by nature illustrate the quotes and text – all with a subtle, contemplative feel. This was a very special assignment.

We have just launched Una’s supporting website. The design integrates the book illustrations in a spare, light-filled layout to best highlight her beautiful text. The guys at OM4 built the site. Visit it here.

The Cat’s Pyjamas – Graduate Exhibition

Last night the Graphic Design graduates of Central Institute launched their exhibition with great panache.

I was invited to judge the Branding portfolios & was so impressed with the mature work, professional presentation and level of creativity. The Branding award was fittingly won by Amanda Hay, her folio laden with accomplished design and strong typography. To mention a couple of high-achieving contenders – Claire Lowes (loved LowDown cafe!); Edwin Visser (he’s good-to-go with a folio featuring live jobs); Dion Douglas and Megan Isabella. Advertising gal Helen King has a job in the bag already (no surprise!). Outside my brief, but winning my gold star for featuring an Elvis illustration, & wowing everyone – Shay Colley. Congrats guys! It was great to meet you all.

It’s well-worth a saunter down to the exhibition at Gallery Central Aberdeen St, open until the 28th.

Shag-a-rama in Perth

There were tales of last-minute spit and polish, a bomb-scare evacuation, and the artist even hanging his own paintings, but the opening of Outré Gallery Perth on Friday night went off with a Shebang!

It’s a great thing to have Shag ~ aka Mr Josh Agle ~ in Perth again, and he was at his amusing, bon vivant best (well, we were well-lubricated, esp. after some cocktail indulgence at Deville’s).

Check out the new 260 William St space and the exhibition ‘Inscrutable Mystery Guide’ – the paintings must be viewed in full panoramic splendor. It’s up for 3 weeks.

The Bird Paintings of Gostelow

His painstaking watercolours of flowers and birds are just captivating. But what incredible dedication: after retirement he set himself a challenge of painting all the recorded species of Australian birds. An amazing collection of works.

I bought this book to inspire my recuperating Mum – Happy Birthday!
