Easter Sort-Out

Knit your way to winter happiness

Yes – it’s post-storm cleanup time! Easter weekend passed in a nice blur of reading, watching Mad Men (I’m obsessed), sipping the odd glass of Sauv Blanc, and sorting.. wait, that’s every weekend!

Yesterday I offloaded a cool collection of EYE and Baseline typography magazines to an old friend from uni days.

Then I listed some vintage knitting magazines on eBay – with more to come. I prefer to let these lovelies go to a good caring home, rather than sit neglected in files at my place. But look, aren’t the fashions gorgeous? And I had a good laugh at the names the inventive editors give to their jumper creations: Paula, Melinda, Gayle were all smoldering babes, but then there was a rather plain apple-munching Eilleen.

Now that I’m looking at those hats, I’m almost tempted to pick up the needles…

Floreat Lakes

Hailstone Storm 2010

What started as an exciting oddity – hailstones in Perth – quickly developed into disaster movie stuff.

Within 5 minutes our front lawn turned into a lake lapping into our house, the roof became Swiss cheese and water poured from light fittings, ceiling fans and cornices, and windows were smashed. Neighbours kindly brought in armloads of towels to help us mop up. I had images of Charlton Heston parting the Red Sea – where’s a staff when you need one?

Amazingly, the computers survived, and our bedroom stayed dry. Our cat bolted, but was later found in a neighbour’s house watching TV.

Greens Pool in the Sun

Is there a more spectacular place to swim? I doubt it (although the water can be rather fresh!) – just ask my sister – she swims there every week whatever the vagaries of the weather.

Snorkelling and swimming with my nephews on the long weekend was great.

Albany

I took a quick trip to Denmark to spend time with the family on the long weekend – a welcome respite from the thundery, sweltering Perth weather… a snappy breeze and even a touch of rain in Albany! Try the rose and almond friands at the new Liberté at the London Hotel. And a Cointreau, peut-être.

Thunderbirds – a Retro Metal site

Working with possibly the best client ever (no changes, free rein, and a wealth of images), I’ve just completed this website dedicated to Thunderbirds in general, and Perth Thunderbirds in particular.

The site went from concept to live in less than a week. It’s built on the OM4 platform, naturally, with more features than a ‘64, and is gonna run a lot faster too. The site can be updated easily by the mechanically-savvy but technically-naive Paul, it runs the metal-heavy photo galleries like a charm, and you can subscribe free! And who doesn’t want to know when the next TBird Pancake Run is going to be held?

Jump into some retro styling, and maybe learn a bit about distinguishing the chrome detailing of the ‘56 from the ‘57. See it here.

Mark Greenland Photography

Mark Greenland’s day job is practicing Law. After hours, he ditches the Mont Blanc and picks up the Mamiya to take amazing landscapes – and occasionally the odd landscaped nude.

The site is minimal, shunning distracting web-world gimicky things.
Check out the website here.
Another example of the great versatility of the OM4 platform.

Clayfork – one cool label

clayfork

I didn’t design this lovely label… I just wish I had!
Discovered this on the weekend in the venerable ‘Bucks Off Liquor Store’ and instantly fell in love.
The gorgeous type – my kind of slab serif (maybe it’s Caecilia – one of my favourites?); the minimal effect; the wonderful silver foil; the detailed fork illustration with a lovely spot varnish… ahh. When label design works.

So I’m yet to sample its wonders, but it’s going in the fridge now, and hey, if you’re the designer, salut to you!
And please drop me a line to say so.

Fans of Moombaki

trixie.moom
Now that December has dawned, bringing with it the onset of Christmas Panic Syndrome, maybe it’s a good time to get one thing sorted. My sweet sister is offering some wonderful bonuses at Moombaki for mailing list customers, and as usual is helping someone else in the process – Oxfam Save Water/Save Lives project.

I suggest you take the initiative and Save Water/Drink Wine over Christmas! Moombaki is endorsed by the most venerated critics, including James Halliday, Ray Jordan and Trixie, as you can see.

Go get some now!
